What's a TRIQUETRA? |
 |
I found the triquetra that I use in WiccaWorks designs
back in 1989, in a book by Barbara G. Walker, titled:
"The Woman's Dictionary of Symbols and Sacred Objects"
ISBN 0-06-250923-3 (pbk)
A triquetra is an ancient Celtic Triple-Goddess symbol
made popular lately by the TV show "CHARMED".
It is probable that they only chose the triquetra to avoid
using a pentacle, which would have drawn Christian flak,
but they did NOT invent this symbol, as some seem to think,
and I did NOT steal the design, also as some seem to think.
In fact, when I first used the design on chalices in 1992,
nobody seemed to understand the significance of the symbol,
so I retired the pattern. I thank the producers of "Charmed"
for making this design viable after all these years.
The triquetra is composed of three yonic vesicas
and a circle is added to link them.
Some versions are interlaced, some are not.
The ones I use on our chalices and pendants are interlaced.
Christianity "assimilated" this symbol along with many others,
back when they "converted" Britain at swordpoint,
but they typically assign it male meanings.
